1. Introduction
Welcome to App Usage Timer ("the App", "we", "our", or "us"). We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard information when you use our Android application.
By installing and using App Usage Timer, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please uninstall the application.
2. Information We Collect
a) Device Usage Statistics (On-Device Only)
With your explicit permission, the App reads Android's UsageStats API to track how long you use each app per day. This data is stored locally in the app's private database on your device and is never transmitted to our servers.
b) User-Entered Data (On-Device Only)
- App limits you configure (daily time caps per app)
- Focus session settings and Pomodoro preferences
- Family profile names and parental PIN hash (stored as a one-way hash)
- Daily goals, bedtime hours, and break reminder intervals
- Detox challenge titles and completion records
All of the above is stored locally on your device only.
c) Advertising Identifiers (via Google AdMob)
The App uses Google AdMob to display advertisements. AdMob may collect device identifiers (including the Android Advertising ID), IP address, and general usage signals to serve relevant ads. This data is governed by Google's Privacy Policy. You can opt out of personalized ads in your device settings under Settings → Google → Ads → Opt out of Ads Personalization.
d) Crash & Diagnostics Data
If the app crashes, anonymized diagnostic information (device model, Android version, stack trace) may be collected automatically by the Android platform or Google Play Services to help us fix bugs. No personally identifiable information is included.
3. Permissions Explained
- PACKAGE_USAGE_STATS — Required to read how long each app is used. You must manually grant this in Android Settings. Without it, screen-time tracking is unavailable.
- SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW — Used to display on-screen overlays when a daily limit is reached (limit warning dialog).
- RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED — Allows the monitoring service to restart automatically after device reboot so tracking continues seamlessly.
- FOREGROUND_SERVICE — Keeps the background usage-tracking service alive without being killed by the OS.
- INTERNET / ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE — Required by Google AdMob to load and display advertisements.
- VIBRATE — Used for break reminder and Focus Mode notifications.
- WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE / READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE — Used only when you explicitly export a PDF or CSV report to your Downloads folder.
- POST_NOTIFICATIONS (Android 13+) — Required to show break reminders, bedtime alerts, and Pomodoro notifications.
4. How We Use Information
- Display your daily screen-time statistics and usage history
- Enforce per-app daily limits and show gentle bypass screens
- Generate AI-powered insights and wellbeing scores from local data
- Track streaks, achievements, and detox challenge progress
- Send break reminders, bedtime alerts, and Pomodoro phase notifications
- Generate PDF / CSV reports when you request them
- Display relevant advertisements through Google AdMob
We never sell, rent, or share your personal screen-time data with third parties for marketing purposes.
5. Data Storage & Security
All usage data, profiles, limits, and settings are stored in an encrypted SQLite database inside the app's private storage on your device. This data is not accessible to other apps and is not backed up to the cloud unless you have enabled Android's backup service.
Parental PINs are stored as a one-way cryptographic hash (SHA-256). We cannot recover your PIN if you forget it.
Exported PDF and CSV report files are saved to your device's Downloads folder, which may be accessible to other apps with storage permissions.
6. Children's Privacy
App Usage Timer includes a Family Profiles feature designed for parents to manage children's screen time. The App does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Usage data for child profiles is stored locally on the parent's device and is not transmitted anywhere.

7. Third-Party Services
The App integrates the following third-party SDKs:
- Google AdMob — Ad serving and monetization. Google Privacy Policy
- Google Play Services — Analytics and crash reporting. Google Privacy Policy
- AndroidX / Jetpack Libraries — UI components and local database (Room). No data is sent to external servers.
We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third-party services. Please review their respective privacy policies.
8. Your Rights & Choices
- Revoke permissions — You can revoke any permission (Usage Stats, Notifications, Storage) in your Android Settings at any time. The App will continue to work for features that don't require those permissions.
- Delete your data — Uninstalling the App removes all locally stored data from your device permanently.
- Export your data — Use the Reports screen to export your usage history as a CSV file.
- Opt out of personalized ads — Go to your device Settings → Google → Ads to manage ad personalization preferences.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Effective Date" at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
