GPS & Barometric Altitude Tracker
1. Introduction
Welcome to Altimeter ("the App", "we", "our", or "us"). We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting any information that you provide while using the App.
This Privacy Policy explains what data the App collects, how it is used, and your rights regarding that data. By installing or using Altimeter, you agree to the practices described in this Policy.
2. Data We Collect
2.1 Data stored only on your device
All altitude readings, session recordings, waypoints, and settings are stored exclusively on your device using a local SQLite database. This data is never transmitted to our servers or any third-party server (except as described in Section 3 for advertising).
- GPS coordinates (latitude, longitude, altitude) — stored locally only
- Barometric pressure readings — stored locally only
- Recorded session data (timestamps, altitude history, ascent/descent) — stored locally only
- Waypoints (name, location, altitude) — stored locally only
- App settings and preferences — stored locally only
2.2 Map tile data
The offline map feature uses OpenStreetMap tile data. When you first view a map area, tile images are downloaded from OpenStreetMap servers (openstreetmap.org) and cached on your device for offline use. OpenStreetMap's privacy policy applies to these requests: osmfoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy.
2.3 Advertising data (Google AdMob)
The App uses Google AdMob to display advertisements. AdMob may collect and process certain data to show relevant ads, including:
- Device identifiers (Advertising ID)
- IP address
- Device type, OS version, and language
- General location (country/region level)
- Ad interaction data (impressions, clicks)
Google's data collection is governed by Google's Privacy Policy: policies.google.com/privacy. You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting your device's advertising settings (Settings → Privacy → Ads → Opt out of Ads Personalisation).
3. How We Use Your Data
- Altitude & sensor data — to display real-time altitude, pressure, weather forecasts, and elevation profiles within the App.
- Session recordings — to build elevation charts, calculate statistics, and enable GPX/KML export.
- Location (GPS) — to determine your current position for altitude measurement, map display, and waypoint saving. Location is only accessed when you have the App open or have enabled background recording.
- Advertising — Google AdMob uses device data to serve ads that help us keep the App free.
4. Permissions We Request
- ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION / ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION — Required to obtain GPS altitude and to show your position on the map.
- ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION — Required only when background session recording is active, so altitude continues to be logged when the screen is off.
- INTERNET / ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE — Used to download map tiles for offline caching and to load advertisements.
- FOREGROUND_SERVICE / FOREGROUND_SERVICE_LOCATION — Allows the background recording service to run with a visible notification, as required by Android for long-running location access.
- POST_NOTIFICATIONS (Android 13+) — Used to show the background recording notification and storm-alert notifications.
- WAKE_LOCK — Keeps the GPS chip active during background recording so readings are not lost.
5. Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data.
Data may be shared only in the following limited circumstances:
- Google AdMob — advertising data as described in Section 2.3.
- OpenStreetMap — your IP address is sent to tile servers when downloading map tiles (standard web request).
- User-initiated export — when you tap "Export GPX" or "Export KML", you share session data with an app of your own choosing via the Android share sheet. We have no involvement in or visibility over what happens after you share.
- Legal obligation — if required by law, we may disclose information to comply with legal processes or protect the rights and safety of users.
6. Data Retention & Deletion
All data created by the App (sessions, waypoints, settings) is stored only on your device. You can delete individual sessions or waypoints within the App at any time. Uninstalling the App will permanently remove all locally stored data.
We do not retain any of your data on external servers; therefore, there is no server-side data to request deletion of.
7. Children's Privacy
Altimeter is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided information through the App, please contact us at toolsappdang@gmail.com and we will take steps to address it.
8. Security
All data is stored in a private, sandboxed application directory that is not accessible to other apps (unless your device is rooted). We do not transmit personal altitude or location data over the internet.
While we strive to protect your information, no method of electronic storage is 100 % secure. We encourage you to keep your device's operating system up to date.
9. Third-Party Services
The App integrates the following third-party services, each with their own privacy policy:
- Google AdMob — policies.google.com/privacy
- OpenStreetMap — osmfoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy
10. Your Rights
Depending on your country or region, you may have the right to:
- Access the data the App holds about you (all of which is visible within the App itself)
- Delete your data (done by clearing app data or uninstalling)
- Opt out of personalised advertising (via Android's advertising settings)

11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this Policy periodically. Continued use of the App after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated Policy.
